The ‘Heiva’ festival in Bora Bora is a month-long celebration held in Vaitape town which highlights the rich history and traditions of the Tahitian culture. Held between Jun and July, the festival coincides with Bastille Day, which commemorates the French Revolution. This vibrant celebration is a feast for the senses, full of music, dance, food, and art.
One of the most popular events during the Heiva festival is the dancing competition. Dancers from around the island practice for months to perfect their routines, which tell stories of local legends. The performances are rich in traditional themes, such as love, warrior culture, and the sea, centering on the culture’s connection to nature.
Art and craft are also an essential part of the festival. There are many local craftspeople selling their handmade items such as beautiful shell jewelry, woven baskets and bags, and ‘Pareu’. Visitors can purchase locally-made souvenirs and immerse themselves into the rich Polynesian culture.
Additionally, most of the huts made during the festival are built from the ground up, using locally sourced materials. These huts serve as restaurants, snack bars, game rooms and dance bars, all construction is open to the public.
During the Heiva festival, visitors can sample a wide variety of local cuisine. With many unique flavors and influences ranging from Polynesia, Asia, and France, traditional dishes such as Poisson cru (raw fish marinated in lime juice, coconut milk, and vegetables) and roasted pork are a must-try.
Overall, Heiva is a unique and immersive experience to dive into the beauty and magic of Polynesian culture. From the dance competitions to the incredible local crafts sold during festivities, it is no surprise that this vibrant celebration has become a must see event for anyone who is truly passionate about immersing themselves in the culture and beauty of Tahiti.
